ABSTRACT: In this talk I will present the results of the development of a comprehensive screening battery to identify kindergarten children at risk of reading failure. Through a three-year longitudinal study in a large sample of Spanish speaking children, we found that: i. screening with high classification accuracy is feasible and cost-effective and, ii. the role of preliteracy skills in reading acquisition in a transparent orthography differs from that reported in less transparent ones.
